December automobile sales at the “Big Three” are apt to fall about 7% according to a survey by Bloomberg. That would put total vehicle sales in the US at about 16.1 million for 2007, the worst year since 1998.

The obvious causes for the dropping demand for new vehicles are the housing crisis and high fuel prices. What’s less apparent is that a recession in vehicle demand could wipe out the value of most of the cost savings that GM (NYSE: GM), Ford (NYSE: F), and Chrysler have gotten from cost cutting and new UAW contracts.

GM claims that it has cut annual costs by $9 billion. It has also transferred the liabilities of its health plans for workers to a new UAW fund which should drive further expense reductions.

Now, two forces are working against auto company revenue. The first is falling demand which could cut US car sales another million units in 2008, according to some industry experts. The second is that Detroit may need to offer bigger incentives to keep the Japanese from getting more market share. Those incentives will eat into profit margins.

Ford and GM trade near multi-year lows now, and that could get much worse.

RSS for sites without it and more

Though it might seem like everything has an RSS feed nowadays, lots of sites still lack the feature, leaving RSS fiends with no option but to actually surf the internet (blasphemous!). Fortunately, there’s Dapper: The Data Mapper, a web service that will take information from a site and package it in the form of your choice (RSS feeds, Google Maps, iCalendar, and more).

In order to create a “Dapp,” or Dapper app, navigate to the Dapper site and click on “create a new Dapp.” The next few steps are very interesting, requiring users to answer a variety of questions regarding the source of information. The answers will depend on the format you choose and the information you’d like to collect. Options include RSS, Dapp XML, Google Gadget and others. The process of creating a Dapp should be pretty simple if the user comprehends the concept of RSS.

It might seem like RSS feed creation is the most obvious function of the service, but it’s in the more complex stuff that Dapper shines. You can, for example, have the latest YouTube search results for a given keyword appear in your iCalendar daily. The possibilities certainly aren’t endless, but there are a lot of them.

A federal judge has told Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM) that it can no longer make chips based on three patents held by rival Broadcom (NASDAQ: BRCM). The company can make use of the intellectual property for another year, giving its some time to reach resolution with its rival.

Qualcomm will nearly certainly have to pay royalties if it wants to keep marketing chips based on the Broadcom patents.

According to The Wall Street Journal, “The chips are used in two kinds of third-generation cellular networks — one called EV-DO, which Qualcomm developed, and another called WCDMA that’s supported by a broader array of chip makers.”

Reuters quotes Broadcom’s general counsel as saying, “Broadcom should not have to compete against companies that use Broadcom’s own patented technology against us, and this injunction puts a stop to Qualcomm doing just that.”

It now appears that Qualcomm’s strategy of leaning on customers and rivals has come to an end.
