I Don’t Believe in Imaginary Property writes “Ars Technica has up a nice article on why security consultant Ed Giorgio’s statement that ‘privacy and security are a zero-sum game’ is wrong. The author reasons that, due to Metcalfe’s law, the more valuable a government network is to the good guys, the more valuable it is to the bad guys. Given the trend in government to gather all of its eggs into one database, unless more attention is paid to privacy, we’ll end up with neither security nor privacy. In other words, privacy and security are a positive-sum game with precarious trade-offs — you can trade a lot of privacy away for completely no gain in security, but you don’t have to.”

BoingBoing is reporting that the FBI might be burying the existence of a document that proves US officials stole nuclear secrets for eventual sale to Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. “One of the documents relating to the case was marked 203A-WF-210023. Last week, however, the FBI responded to a freedom of information request for a file of exactly the same number by claiming that it didn’t exist. But The Sunday Times has obtained a document signed by an FBI official showing the existence of the file. Edmonds believes the crucial file is being deliberately covered up by the FBI because its contents are explosive. She accuses the bureau of an ‘outright lie.’”

Flickr Fight

Ever wonder who would win in a fight, Superman or the Extraordinary Hulk? Well, Flickr Fight certainly won’t tell you. But the site will let you know which superhero is more popular on Flickr, and isn’t that just as useful?

In a nutshell, Flickr Fight lets you enter two search terms. The web service will then go to work tracking down all the Flickr images tagged with those terms. The keywords with the most images wins. Using this highly scientific method we were able to determine that Ubuntu beats Gentoo; Windows Vista beats Windows XP; Windows beats Mac, while mac beats PC; and as you probably guessed, Superman kicks the Incredible Hulk in the behind.

ChatMaker

Ever need to organize a group chat with a bunch of people who have never heard of IRC and can’t seem to concur on a common IM client? ChatMaker makes it simple to set up a temporary web-based chatroom which you can discard when you’re done. How simple? All you have to do is name your room and click the “Go” button. Seriously, that’s it.

There’s no registration required. In fact, there’s not even an option to create an account, which means that when you login to a chat room you’ll have an unwieldy name like Guest 1817. But you can easily change your name using the IRC-like /nick command. You can also designate actions by typing /me, but that’s about it for the IRC commands.

ChatMaker also supports some basic HTML commands like for providing a hyperlink, for italics, and for bold. While ChatMaker probably isn’t going to win any awards for its interface, the service could be the easiest we’ve ever seen for setting up a multi-user chatroom.

WordPress 3GBAutomattic, the company behind the WordPress blogging platform have dramatically increased the online file storage capacity for free WordPress.com blogs. How dramatically? Well bloggers used to get 50MB of space for images and documents. Now they have the ability to upload up to 3GB. For free.

If 3GB still isn’t enough, you can upgrade to 5GB for $20/year, 15GB for $50/year or 25GB for $90/year.

Google’s Blogger gives free users 1GB of on the internet storage for media files for free, although you can upgrade to 10GB for just $20/year, while TypePad users would need to pay $300/year to get 3GB of space.

WordPress users who had previously paid for a 1GB upgrade will now automatically have their accounts boosted to 5GB for no additional fee. Free accounts still have some limits. For example, you’re not granted to post advertisements or sponsored posts on a WordPress.com web site. But for bloggers who are more interested in finding a platform for their voice than in making a buck, this upgrade should make WordPress an attractive substitute to other blog hosting sites like Blogger or LiveJournal.

gattaca writes “A lack of security controls allowed hackers to “wipe” the Recording Industry Association of America’s (RIAA) website on Sunday. The existence of an SQL injection attack on the RIAA’s site came to light via social network news site Reddit. Soon after hackers were making merry, turning the site into a blank slate, among other things. The RIAA has restored RIAA.org, although whether it’s any more secure than before remains open to question, TorrentFreak reports.”
