IdaAshley points out the latest from IBM developerWorks’ Web development section, which talks about shoring up potential weaknesses in Ajax applications. It follows another current guide for improving Ajax performance. “In this article, you’ll learn about Ajax security tools, which you’ll be using to scan for SQL injection and cross-site scripting vulnerabilities; to set a master password; and to restore the say of all windows after crashes. You’ll take a look at tools and utilities that ensure that linked Web sites in applications are not on the blocked lists and which prevent hackers from altering browser functionality, defacing Web applications, and achieving malicious results. You’ll find these utilities divided into three types within the article: hardening tools, Firefox tools, and Firefox add-ons.”

sufijazz writes “The US government isn’t alone in wanting to snoop on everything citizens do over email/phone. The Indian government wants that right too. RIM is stating they have no means to decrypt, no master key, and no back door to grant the government to access email.” The article notes that 114,000 BlackBerries are in use on the Indian subcontinent. The government is concerned about attacks by militants and sees the BlackBerry as a security risk.

When it comes to dealing with blog spam, there’s no shortage of tools. Blogger comes with a built-in Google crafted tool, WordPress has Akismet (and Akismet is also available for Movable Type, Drupal, Expression Engine and tons of others), Defensio and others, Drupal has Mollom, and so on. Now Six Apart, the company behind Movable Type, TypePad and Vox, has released their own open source anti-spam tool for bloggers.
TypePad AntiSpam is the product of the antispam technology Six Apart has been using in their TypePad hosted blogs since May 2007. Now the service, which is in beta, is available to anyone, open source, and free — regardless of how big your site is or how many comments you receive. Akismet, the service this is most akin to, is free for personal use but starts at $5 a month for anyone making more than $500 a month off their blog.
TypePad AntiSpam is available as a plugin for WordPress 2.3 and 2.5 and Movable Type 3.3 and up. Six Apart states they plan to support other platforms with plugins soon, but the API is available for anyone who wants to roll their own.
We just installed TypePad AntiSpam on one of our WordPress blogs (which was running Akismet) and we’ll post our thoughts in comparing the services in the weeks to come.

Glide has launched an updated version of its web-based “operating system.” Like its predecessors, Glide OS 3.0 provides users with a desktop-like space within a browser window. You can use Glide’s web-based applications to create Word documents, spreadsheets, or presentations. You can also play music, manage pics and videos, and send and receive email. In other words, you can do many of the same things you’d do with a desktop operating system, but in a web browser.
What sets Glide apart from many of its competitors is that Glide offers a suite of tools that let you synchronize your files with a Windows, Mac, Linux, or Solaris machine. There’s also Glide Sync software for a number of mobile phone models. Free account holders get up to 5GB of web space, and if you need more, you can shell out a few bucks a month for additional storage.
One of the new features in Glide OS 3 is a Glide Group tool that adds social networking features. You can communicate with other Glide users by sending messages or sharing media files.

Dr. Jim writes “The good folks over at the Gartner Group have revealed the top 10 technologies that they believe will change the world over the next four years. The usual suspects including multi-core chips, virtualization, and cloud computing are on the list. Multicore servers and virtualization will mean that firms will need fewer boxes, and apps can be easily moved from box to box (and right out the door to an outsourced data center). Workplace social networks and cloud computing means that the need for a centralized IT department will go away. Firms will no longer need to own/maintain the boxes that they use to run their firm’s apps. With no need to touch a box, there will be no need to have the IT staff co-located with the boxes.”

I Don’t Believe in Imaginary Property writes “You can’t make stuff like this up. The EU is actually testing a prototype system of cameras in airplanes to monitor passengers’ facial expressions in order to detect both terrorism and ‘air rage.’ The Security of Aircraft in the Future European Environment (SAFEE) project used an Airbus A380 fuselage with six wide-angle cameras to watch for people running or loitering near the cockpit door, as well as a camera in the back of every seat to watch for facecrime like sweating too much, or acting nervous. But that’s okay, because the system won’t alert anyone until it sees a ‘combination of signs,’ instead of just one stray expression, or they might accidentally catch a lot of people who are afraid of flying or of being watched.”

Fallen Andy notes that Comcast, one of the largest US ISPs, lost control of its domain name to what appeared to be juvenile social engineers of the old school — i.e. not in it for the money. The intruders got into Comcast’s registrar account at Network Solutions and repointed the domain’s DNS records. A blog entry at SANS points out how trivially simple this can be. Reader ElvenKnight points out an insightful interview up at Wired with the two young guys who perpetrated the hack.
