I Don’t Believe in Imaginary Property writes “The war against the alt.* hierarchy of Usenet continues as NY Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has convinced two more ISPs to drop access to part of Usenet. They’ve also set up the website NY Stop Child Porn, and convinced California to join them in the fight. In some sense, this is rather like bulldozing the slums to fight crime; sure, it might get rid of a lot of undesirables, but it also affects many innocent people, and everyone will now begin migrating elsewhere in droves. The article notes, ‘Cuomo’s new web site signifies that he’s clearly not done yet. It includes contact information for 20 ISPs that presumably operate in New York, and text of a letter to send to them to urge that they sign on to the campaign.’ And you thought the Eternal September was bad…”

utkalum writes “After Steven Warshak’s indictment and conviction on charges of mail and wire fraud, money laundering and other federal charges, he learned that key evidence in the case was obtained by the government under a 1986 law permitting no-warrant searches of email communications stored for longer than 180 days. He also learned that, despite the Electronic Communication Privacy Act’s requirement that such searches be disclosed to the suspect no more than 90 days after they were commenced, the Government simply couldn’t be bothered to comply. Now, the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit has refused (9-5) to hear Warshak’s constitutional challenge to the Act (PDF), claiming that the question raised is ‘not yet ripe’ for adjudication. It’s worth noting that the court also vacated an earlier injunction against using that act to read the e-mail of other people in Warshak’s district. Read on for an excerpt from the ruling.

coondoggie writes to tell us that in a current report to Congress by the FTC, the National Do Not Call Registry got glowing reviews. They seem to be well established now with $21 million in fees in the bank, 22 successful court cases, and an nearly 70% approval rating. “In 2007, a total of 6,242 entities paid fees totaling $21,602,003 for access to the National Registry. According to the FTC, telemarketers and sellers can access registered telephone numbers and pay the appropriate fee for that access, if any, through an Internet website dedicated to that purpose. The only information about consumers that companies receive from the National Registry is the registered telephone number. Since the Registry’s inception, a total of 18,197 one-of-a-kind entities have paid fees for access to the National Registry. The total amount of fees paid by all entities since the inception of the National Registry through the end of 2007 is $80,629,778, the report stated.”

The Linkup closes

Once upon a time there was a company called Streamload that let users upload large media files to a web site fo sharing with their friends. Eventually Streamload changed its name to MediaMax and offered pretty much the same service. This year the company changed its name again, this time to The Linkup and launched a new business model: a social network based around on the web file storage and sharing.

Apparently the whole social network thing didn’t really pan out, as The Linkup has announced plans to kill the service on August 8th. The company has posted a message on its homepage stating that it will no longer accept new uploads or new accounts. It will also no longer charge current customers. If you’ve got any media stored at The Linkup, you’ll probably want to make sure you’ve got a backup before August 8th, because at that point the company will delete your files.

According to the note, The Linkup had problems transfering user files from MediaMax. That’s kind of an understatement. What actually happened was that the company deleted nearly half of its user files. Many were recoverable, but some weren’t.

Did you use The Linkup, MediaMax or Streamload? What was your experience like? Will you miss this service or just move on to other online storage sites?

meebone

It might seem illogical to tie Meebo to a desktop app, but that’s exactly what’s going on here. Meebone uses Adobe AIR to bring Meebo’s services to your desktop through a dedicated app, but it’s still in beta. So if you’re down to try it, keep in mind that you’ll probably encounter some problems… just like we did.

When attempting to login to AIM, Meebone was confused by a space in one of our user names. Other IM clients and services — even Meebo itself — aren’t usually bothered by spaces. But that was our only major issue with the AIR-based app. And we’re hoping it will be fixed before Meebone graduates from beta.

We tested the app with Google Speak and AIM accounts. Each logged-in successfully, brought up buddy lists, etc, etc. In other words, it introduced a basic Meebo set-up to our desktop, and we liked it. Just barely, but we did care about it even though it sort of defeats the purpose of Meebo itself.

Keeper Of Keys writes “According to newteevee.com, The Pirate Bay, those fun- and freedom-loving Swedes, have embarked on a project to encrypt all world wide web traffic, probably by means of an OS-level wrapper around all network connections, which would fall back to an unencrypted connection when the other end is not similarly equipped. The move has been prompted by a recent change in Swedish law, allowing the authorities to snoop on network traffic. This will be a boon to filesharers and anyone else concerned about authorities and trade groups’ current moves towards ‘policing’ network traffic at the ISP level.”

slick_shoes notes a story out of England: a woman named Amanda Hudson is suing six national newspapers for defamation and breach of privacy after they ran stories based on her 15-year-old daughter’s exaggerated claims about her celebration, published on her Bebo site. The celebration was held at the family’s £4m villa in Spain, and the daughter’s account claimed that jewelery had been stolen and furniture and a TV set thrown into the swimming pool; in addition there were claims of sex and drug use. The mom states that this was all falsehood and exaggeration. A number of newspapers picked up claims and photos from Bebo and ran them nationally. From the article: “The case is expected to have far-reaching consequences for third celebrations who use or publish information from social networking sites. Lawyers state it could place a duty on all second-hand users to establish the truth of everything they want to republish from such sites.”

Several readers sent in word that the FCC chairman, Kevin Martin, is calling for sanctions and enforcement actions against Comcast for resetting BitTorrent traffic. “Mr. Martin will circulate an order recommending enforcement action against the company on Friday among his fellow commissioners, who will vote on the measure at an open meeting on Aug. 1… Martin, a Republican, will likely get support from the two Democrats on the commission, who are both proponents of the network neutrality concept. Those three votes would be enough for a majority on the five-member commission.”
