Starbucks‘ (NASDAQ: SBUX) Howard Schultz came back to the CEO role in late 2007 to hopefully rescue the once great concept he has so passionately developed since the 1980s. Fair enough. Could this be the second coming of Steve Jobs of Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) or would it resemble the mediocre return of Michael Dell of Dell (NASDAQ: DELL)? The jury is out and time will tell.

For now, I’ve one major bone to pick. Howard, let’s take some time here to review the store closures. I’m sure a mid-level vice president made the geographical decisions. But I hope you really scoured the list carefully.

Let’s take an example: Minnetonka, Minnesota. Howard, I’m sure it might not mean much to you. After all, you were raised in New York and currently live in Seattle, so Minnesota might be flyover country. Minnetonka is a western suburb of Minneapolis sporting a growing population of about 52,000. Minnetonka is a fairly upscale suburb with near full employment. Just for your information, Minnetonka is also the world headquarters for the biggest private company in the world; probably one of your suppliers. The company is called Cargill — just in case your VP missed it.

It’s on the Starbucks hit list. You’re closing the Minnetonka store. Are you nuts?!! I’ve written in the past that this store should serve as one of your models on how to do it right. Sure, economics eventually have to make sense. This store is about three years old and the growth of traffic has been steady. Used to be one person in line at 10:30 am, now it’s common to see a continuous stream of 7-8 people in that off -hour line. Early mornings are very busy.

Manager Mario Macaruso should serve as a training manager. He’s too much of a gentleman to complain about being on your hit list. Mario is a big believer in Starbucks’ future, but the pain in his eyes is evident. Many of his partners at this store have been there for one or two years, offering the customer a consistency of service, not to mention smiles and morning cheer. You know, the things you espouse about Starbucks!

I’ve visited over 200 Starbucks stores in the past five to six years. This one by far ranks as the ideal customer experience. Funny things happen when time intersects with great service — it’s called profits.

Howard, give this store the time to become profitable if it isn’t already. The Minnetonka demographics fit the bill and store partners are fabulous. Hop on the company jet and fly to Minneapolis — it’s about a three-hour flight — and visit the store. Speak with the partners, watch them work the crowd, take notes.

In fact, make spot checks in other stores on the list. Are they really the ideal candidate? Howard, assuming you aren’t intimately involved in these decisions, it’s time for you to get personally involved.

Sure, I want to save my favorite Starbucks. But I also think CEOs owe it to their shareholders to pay close attention to details in challenging times. To turn Starbucks’ around, you need to make sure the Starbucks you decide to close aren’t actually the ones with the most potential.

By putting together information from several analysts around the world, Bloomberg figures Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) sold as many as 425,000 iPhones the first three days the new handset was on the market. Figures show that the earlier version of the iPhone sold 270,000 units in the first two days it was for sale. Apple also has now partnerships with a huge number of overseas carriers that weren’t in place for iPhone 1.0.

Piper Jaffray & Co figures that Apple will sell over four million iPhones this quarter. That means, with some growth, the handset could be on a pace to sell 15 to 20 million units a year.

While the iPhone sales projections are not impressive compared to the 400 million phones that Nokia (NYSE: NOK) sells each year, the fact that the Apple phone can move this many units at its high price is breathtaking. The cellphone market is currently troubled by the falling prices of handsets as more and more sales move to nations like China and India, and units sold in those countries generally go for low prices, leaving manufacturers with low margins.

Apple seem poised to take a very big part of the segment that all companies in the handset business want — the high-priced smartphone, which also brings carriers big data and voice subscription fees. Off to a flying begin, Apple might just become a dominant player in the sweet spot of the industry.

TokBox AIR

TokBox is a video chat service that lets you communicate via instant message, video, or audio. But unlike other services such as Skype, there’s no need to install any software. You can run TokBox from a web browser. The software will automatically detect your computer’s camera and/or microphone and adjust all the appropriate settings for you.

But sometimes you don’t want to leave a browser window open just so you can chat. Or you might want to do other things with your web browser while chatting. So a desktop client can come in handy. And doday TokBox released one. The desktop version of TokBox is built on Adobe AIR, so it looks and acts nearly exactly the same as the internet version. Because essentially it is the internet version. You just don’t need to launch a web browser to use it.

It took us just a few moments to register for a free account and download and install the software. Our only complaint was that you still need to access the web site to accomplish some tasks. For example, when we wanted to add friends to our contact list, we hit the “find friends” button in TokBox AIR. But when we started the search, TokBox fired up our web browser to show us the results.

This means that you can install Adeona on your laptop and go — there’s no need to rely on a single third celebration. What’s more, Adeona addresses a critical privacy goal different from existing commercial offerings. It is privacy-preserving. This means that no one besides the owner (or an agent of the owner’s choosing) can use Adeona to track a laptop. Unlike other systems, users of Adeona can rest assured that no one can abuse the system in order to track where they use their laptop.”
