Back in March, Brad told you about Password Meter, a web app designed to help you create strong passwords. Want to know how long it would take to brute force?

Pay Hackosis a visit, and try out their Brute Force Calculator, an Open Source PHP app based on an Excel spreadsheet from Mandylion Labs.

Hackosis’ calculator asks for details about your password - not the password itself. Using the information you provide and some swift computational Kung Fu, you’ll get a rough idea of how long it would take someone to discover the correct secret word.

If you use as many web apps as we do, it’s essential to use strong, secure passwords. Even if you use a password generator like LastPass, it never hurts to test them.

Google Reader translate

Google Reader, Bloglines and other RSS readers make it easy to keep on top of the latest news from dozens, or even hundreds of web pages without actually visiting those pages. But if you want to read a web site that constantly covers news you’re interested in, and just happens to be in a language you don’t talk, in the past you’ve needed to exit your RSS reader and load the page in Google Translate or Windows Live Translate or a similar service.

Or you could use a service like Mloovi to translate the RSS feed, but Mloovi has a few limitations, like the inability to show pictures or full feeds. Now it looks like Google is taking things into its own hands, by combining Google Reader with Google Translate.

Here’s how it works. Just subscribe to a blog or news site in another language (assuming you can find the subscribe button). Then go to the feed settings in Google Reader and select “Translate into my language.” That’s it. You only have to do this once per feed and Google Reader will automatically translate that page until you tell it to cease.

Keep in mind, these are machine-generated translations, so they’re far from perfect. But if you don’t have time to learn French just to read a few articles from Le Monde from time to time, this could be the next best thing. Or maybe the thing after that.

If you don’t know anything about the iPhone, the MobileSafari browser, or web design in general, creating an iPhone version of your website can be daunting. Intersquash.com makes it easy. Just put in the address of your site’s RSS feed, give it a name, and click iPhoneize. If you want, upload an icon. That’s all you have to do: Intersquash gives you a little bit of code to paste into the body of your site, and it’s magically optimized for iPhone viewing.

Last time I looked, Intersquash had already iPhonized around 2,000 websites. The results are nothing fancy, but you get a clean, readable, functioning iPhone site. It definitely beats making iPhone users wait for for your full site to load. You do need a working RSS feed to use Intersquash, but you’ve probably got one of those if you use any major blogging platform. If you’re having problems, try a service like Feedburner.

VoxOx

VoxOx is one of those applications that does so many things that the easiest way to describe it is by listing some of the tools it can replace: AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ, Jabber, Google Talk, MSN Messenger, whatever email and social networking notifiers you use. In other words, it’s like Digsby. But with support for video chat and VoIP calls to telephones. Oh yeah, and VoxOx automatically assigns all new users a phone number which people can dial to reach you on your personal.

VoxOx is currently in beta, with clients available for Windows and OS X. Linux and mobile clients are coming soon. And right now some of the services listed in VoxOx are unavailable. For examle, you can link the client to your Yahoo! Mail account to receive a pop up message each time you get a new email. But when you click the button to do the same thing with Gmail, nothing happens.

One of the most interesting things about VoxOx is the company’s business model. You can do text chats with anyone for free. You can make free voice or video calls to anyone using VoxOx. And when you sign up you get 120 minutes of free calls to telephones. You can buy credit for additional calls, or pay a monthly fee fro unlimited access. But each time you refer a friend to the service you get another 2 hours. And VoxOx will also soon add the capability for users to gain points by watching video ads.

If you’re one of the first 500 Download Squad to register using our signup page, you’ll get 1200 VoxOx Points which are good for 1200 domestic phone calls minutes of domestic US phone calls. Keep reading to find out how to get your bonus minutes.

If you’ve ever been in the situation of trying to make plans with a group of people who are all communicating via different methods (SMS, IM, email), then you know how much of a pain it is to keep track of what everyone is doing. Notifu tries to make it easier, with a web app that can send messages to your friends via email, IM or text message, and let you know when they’ve received them.

On Notifu, you can set up a contact list, complete with groups. You can also set up polls, so your friends can text back a single number to indicate what they like to do, and Notifu will count them up for you. Notifu’s developers are also very savvy about web platforms, with an iPhone web app available and an OpenSocial app in the works.

After several false starts, it finally looks like mobile application development has real momentum. Although the iPhone and Android have received a lot of attention in regards to third-party applications, they aren’t the only game in town. Approximately 19 million people have BlackBerry devices and as more and more consumers continue to adopt BlackBerry based smartphones, this is certainly a market with plenty of untapped potential. Back in Might, JLA Ventures and RBC Venture Partners announced the creation of the BlackBerry Partners Fund — a $150 million venture capital fund focussed on applications and services for the BlackBerry platform. This day, the BlackBerry Partners Fund is announcing its first three investments.

The companies receiving funding are buzzd, Digby and WorldMate. I had the opportunity to talk with Kevin Talbot, the Co-Managing Partner of the fund and Nihal Mehta, the CEO of buzzd earlier this week, and both are really excited abut the future of BlackBerry’s role in the mobile application space and the opportunities the Fund can help propel.

Web analytics is an increasingly important metric for web publishers. It used to just be about tracking how many visitors you get and how many pages they view. Technology has improved so that you can now track site entry points, popular keywords, specific post metrics, out-bound clicks, nationality of your visitors and more. The problem is, to actually get that data into something useful, you usually have to dedicate a bunch of time analyzing statistics or you have to pay for an pricey commericial analytics package. Today, NuConomy is officially launching its free web analytics platform, NuConomy Studio, designed to meet both of those challenges.

The platform that NuConomy will most likely be compared to is Google Analytics, because both are free and both offer easy integration into various web platforms. In its scope, however, NuConomy Studio is much more akin to Omniture, but without the hefty licensing fee that pretty much excludes all but the biggest sites from taking advantage of its enhanced metrics.

For instance, most analytics programs can’t monitor interaction with JavaScript (AJAX) or Flash elements. So you can’t get a metric on how frequently that YouTube video is played (or which video is most popular). NuConomy can track AJAX, Flash and Silverlight and then show you what elements (or videos) were most popular. With YouTube videos, you can even find out how visitors are watching the videos before stopping or going to another page. So if you’re a VBlogger, you can superior pinpoint what’s working and what isn’t.

MS Excel online

It looks like Microsoft is finally prepared to launch its answer to Google Docs, Zoho Office, and ThinkFree Office. About a year after launching Office Live Workspace, which is really just a service for people to store and share documents created using desktop apps, Microsoft has announced plans to go ahead with true web-based versions of MS Office applications including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

The Office Web applications will reportedly be stripped down versions of the desktop apps. And it looks like Microsoft will offer at least two tiers of service, with an ad-supported version and a subscription based option for business customers.

The next version of Microsoft Office for the desktop will include the capability to synchronize documents over the internet for access on the go. So Microsoft clearly expects customers to continue paying for the offline version of Office. Somehow I suspect the company will also set aside at least a few special features that are only available in the desktop version.
